A Gluten Free Guide to Salerno, Sorrento and Amalfi Coast

Salerno

Salerno Centro Pizza Gourmet

Last time, we discovered this pizza place, and it was fantastic! They have quite a few interesting pizzas. The prices are a bit higher than most pizzerias, but it’s worth it. Lot of gluten free choses, also starters, like mozzarella balls. And the gluten-free pizza was absolutely heavenly. Probably one of the best gluten free pizza I’ve ever had!

They also have vegetarian, vegan, and lactose-free options, plus gluten-free beer.

📍 Address: Via Roma 202, Salerno

Arienzo Senza Glutine

A bakery and pastry shop in Salerno where you can try gluten-free desserts.

I haven’t been yet, but a friend told me about it, so I’ll definitely check it out next time. If you’re self-catering, this is a great place to do a little shopping. They have artisanal gluten-free pasta. One of my favorite is the brand La Fabbrica della Pasta (Look for the orange label). It’s made in Gragnano, the pasta capital of the Sorrentine Peninsula!

They also sell gluten-free ravioli, perfect for cooking an Italian meal in your Airbnb.

📍 Address: Via Andrea Guglielmini, 7/9, Salerno

Fratelli Panzerotti

A classic Italian-style rosticceria. But completely gluten-free!

A rosticceria is an Italian-style eatery. You can find pre-prepared meals, fried snacks, and little treats to grab and eat on the go. They have pizza slices and other classic Italian street food items. Try some local street food, like crocchè, frittatine di pasta, panzerotti, or arancini.

Perfect if you need a quick snack while sightseeing in Salerno.

📍 Address: Via Roma, 134, Salerno

Cava De’ Tirreni

Madison Pizzeria

I absolutely love the gluten-free pizza here!

All gluten-free pizzas are served on a transparent glass plate to prevent any mix-ups. So you can eat with confidence.

I had a gluten-free pizza with pumpkin cream that I really liked. So much so that I ordered it again the next couple times we had dinner here.

Be sure to reserve in advance, especially on weekends, as the place is very popular with locals. When you call, mention that you want a gluten-free pizza. One evening, we just popped by, and the gluten-free pizza dough was already sold out.

Since the pizza was unavailable, I had the gluten-free French fries that evening. But they were a bit of a disappointment compared to an actual pizza. To avoid this situation, call ahead a couple of hours before to make sure your gluten-free pizza is reserved for you!

Other Gluten-Free Pizza Options in Cava de’ Tirreni

There are many other pizzerias in Cava de’ Tirreni that serve gluten-free pizza.

Fonzies is AIC certified. They offer gluten-free pizza, gluten-free French fries, and even gluten-free hamburgers. GF Beer is available too.

📍Via Capitano Francesco Carillo, 4, 84013 Cava de’ Tirreni

Prisco is another option in Cava de’ Tirreni, but I have yet to try them myself. They are also an AIC-certified pizzeria.

GF Desserts and Ice Cream in Cava de’ Tirreni

Vincent Gelateria Yogurteria

is located in the middle of town, on the corso. They offer gluten-free cones. If you let them know you’re celiac, they’ll use a fresh scooper. Many of their flavors are also lactose- and sugar-free. We often grab ice cream here after dinner since they’re open late at night. It’s the perfect stop on an evening walk during a summer night.

📍Address: Corso Umberto I, 285, 84013 Cava de’ Tirreni SA

Tirrena is a pastry shop that specializes in semi freddo desserts. Semi freddo is an Italian frozen dessert, somewhere between ice cream and mousse. Like mini ice cream cakes in different flavors. Such as pistachio, mango, and mixed berries on top, and many more. They always have a couple of gluten-free flavors available. They are kept and packaged separately, so I believe they’re celiac-friendly. But it’s always better to ask since I haven’t been here in a while.

📍 Address: Via della Repubblica, 25, 84013 Cava de’ Tirreni SA

SORRENTO

Fantastic gluten-free pizza made with their own dough. Highly recommended!

Located in the center of Sorrento, this restaurant has a hidden terrace with citrus trees on the top floor of a palazzo. They also serve excellent seafood dishes at very affordable prices compared to the area.

They use Caputo flour, which is gluten-free but not wheat-free, so it may not be suitable if you have a wheat allergy.

📍 Address: Via Santa Maria delle Grazie, 6, 80067 Sorrento NA

Blu Water

I had delicious gluten-free ravioli filled with ricotta. They offer great seafood too.

📍 Address: Via Padre Reginaldo Giuliani, 37, 80067 Sorrento NA

Gelateria David

Only a 3-minute walk from the Sorrento train station.

Gluten-free waffles and pancakes. Lots of ice cream flavors to choose from! This is a lovely place to relax with some dessert and coffee in Sorrento.

📍 Address: Via Marziale, 19, 80067 Sorrento NA

MAIORI

Osteria & Pizzeria dell’Olmo

They make their own gluten-free pizza dough and offer many gluten-free options on the menu.

I had a fantastic tuna steak here and will definitely be back!

📍 Address: Corso Reginna, 63, 84010 Maiori SA,

VIETRI SUL MARE

Ristorante La Fattoria

They take extra care to ensure that my fish was prepared in a safe environment, without cross-contamination. Gluten-free pasta is available. The restaurant has an agriturismo vibe, very authentic, and sometimes they even have live music! This is an Aic certified restaurant.

📍 Address: Via Iaconti, 2, 84019 Vietri sul Mare SA, Italy

Ristorante Al Limoneto

The staff here is very attentive and accommodating, offering many naturally gluten-free dishes. They also have gluten-free pasta available.

📍 Address: Via Raccio, 3, 84019 Dragonea SA,Italy

Bar Russo

An excellent pastry shop and bar with a surprising variety of gluten-free desserts. From small classic mignon pastries, popular in Italy, to many kind of cakes all GF.

I’m not sure about cross-contamination, so be sure to ask before ordering. Their tiramisu and profiteroles are kept in the display case, so they are probably the safest options.

They also have a great terrace with a sea view. Lactose-free cappuccino is available as well.

📍 Address: Corso Umberto Iᵒ, 170, 84019 Vietri sul Mare SA, Italy

AMALFI

This is a classic cuopperia.

Cuoppo fritto is a typical street food on the Amalfi Coast and in southern Italy in general.

They deep-fry the seafood cuoppo in rice flour, which makes it naturally gluten-free. But they are not certified gluten-free, so if you are celiac, be sure to let them know. They have always been very kind and accommodating with me. The lady changed her gloves and took a fresh batch of seafood from the fridge to minimize the risk of cross-contamination.

This is my absolute go-to snack when in Amalfi!

📍 Address: Via Supportico Gaetano Afeltra, 10, 84011 Amalfi SA, Italy

MINORI

Sal De Riso

This famous pastry shop on the Amalfi Coast. They offers some of their classic desserts in a gluten-free version. Sadly these cakes are kept near those containing gluten. When I asked about cross-contamination, the staff said that it’s most likely not celiac-safe.

So i skipped on them. Hopefully, this will change in the future, given how well-known the place is!

But if you are gluten intolerant and aren’t celiac, give them a try!

📍 Address: Via Roma, 80, 84010 Minori SA, Italy

Ristorante Le Botte

This is not a gluten-free restaurant, and gluten is listed as an allergen on every item on the menu.

I’ve had seafood here, like whole fish, as that is propably the safest option. If you let them know you are celiac, they will do their best to prepare something safe for you.

Napoli

There are so many gluten-free options in Naples that I will write a dedicated guide soon.

But here is a list of some of my favorite places in Naples:

  • Grom: A gluten-free ice cream shop found throughout Italy, including in Naples.
  • Leopoldo Senza Glutine: The famous Neapolitan bakery chain has a completely gluten-free bakery.
  • Zero Zero Grano: A dedicated gluten-free restaurant in Naples.
  • Many pizzerias offer gluten-free pizzas, so there are plenty of options to try! My go to gluten free pizza place in Napels is Pizzaioli Veraci Toledo.
